The Laws of Life and Death

The Laws of Life and DeathThese days we hear a lot about “death with dignity,” but what does the dignity of human life demand? As the lobbyists for euthanasia and assisted suicide grow in influence, and as we face a healthcare future more murky and frightening than it has been in generations, our society finds itself in desperate need of sound and compassionate guidance on end-of-life issues.

He writes: “In the coming year it looks as if there will be very aggressive attempts in both courts and legislatures to advance physician-assisted suicide (or as its proponents prefer to call it, the “right to die”). … The American Medical Association (AMA) opposes euthanasia and physician-assisted suicide, stating that they are “fundamentally incompatible with the physician’s role as healer, would be difficult or impossible to control, and would pose serious societal risks.” Why should we as Catholics oppose the legalization of assisted suicide/euthanasia? Assisted Suicide and Euthanasia: A Guide to the Evidence

The Anscombe Centre, a Roman Catholic academic institute that engages with the moral questions arising in clinical practice and biomedical research, has published an ‘evidence guide’ in order to inform the debate about whether to legalize physician assisted suicide or euthanasia in the United Kingdom. Most of the sources cited here are also relevant to the debates on assisted suicide or euthanasia in other counties. It will help your to get a sense of the different issues at stake and where to find further information, especially the most reliable information that is freely available online. This guide aims to be useful for students, scholars and research assistants to officials or parliamentarians. More than this, it is offered to anyone who is concerned about these issues and wishes to assess the evidence.

You can go to the evidence guide by clicking here.
